Figure Drawing with Tommy!
I really enjoyed figure drawing. Every time I get to draw with a live model and short timed poses I find myself improving a lot with each drawing. In the moment I really hate how short all the poses are and how much I have to break poses down to basic movements, but being able to do that is a very valuable skill. This year also we got to do some more work with contour and value and our 45 minute study was like a big culmination of everything we had worked on. Overall I am ver

Progress: ABEX #2
It did change a lot. As I kept going I tried to use different strokes and the different types of marks we practiced in class, and I think I leaned really heavily (maybe too much) into using the knife for a less fluid mark while using the larger brushes for big marks. I did not use finer brushes as much, and I only made a few marks with charcoal the entire time, but I still like the way that the colors interact and the contrast between the different marks. I want to add more t

Progress: ABEX #1
Painting without a set figure is very very hard. Making my painting I tried to use some of the different pathways to abstraction we practiced in class and I think they worked fairly well but it was still difficult to translate a composition from my sketchbook to the canvas, and then deal with the changes as I kept going. I think it was really important to not get too attached to anything in my painting, as I ended up covering up a lot of the features that I had made intention

Progress: Still Life #2
Since basically starting most of the painting from scratch, things have gone a lot better. I have been trying to keep a relatively consistent height when viewing the still life I am painting in order to avoid any more issues with perspective. Overall I am much more happy with how the painting is looking since then. I have also tried to be less absolute with the grading in between colors and to try and understand how to crate small tonal differences to create form rather than

Progress: Still Life #1
When I started working on the still life one of the biggest struggles off rip was trying to make an interesting composition without using too many complicated objects. My original idea involved a flower, a wood carving, and a clock. Thankfully Coach knocked some sense into me and I got rid of the clock and agreed to simplify the carving in the painting. In the end I had this final composition. After getting the composition down I sketched it out with charcoal and began painti

Progress: Sculpture Project
So far I have not gotten very far on my sculpture, but I do have a clear vision of what I want that I think I can achieve within the time frame of the project. I have started on carving out the legs of the figure, and I've cut out the pieces of wood that I'll need for the body and arms. These are the legs so far, and one thing I noticed while carving was that the wood is very hard and can be kind of challenging to carve into especially around knots in the wood. I would like t

Progress: Self Portrait
Here are a bunch of pictures from my process when I was drawing my self portrait. Overall I am very proud of how it turned out, but there are definitely a few things that I know I could have done better. I think my biggest issue while drawing was that it just got very repetitive, in part because I didn't use too many different marks from my artist copy. I think if I had utilized cross hatching more effectively I could have gotten more contrast in between lights and darks on t

Progress: Artist Copy
This week was particularly challenging because I had to restart my entire project. My original got lost so I had to re-resize and start working on the mark all over again, however, it was not too bad because I started on a different portion and worked on some completely different marks. Rembrandt uses a LOT of hatching and cross hatching, but also utilizes a lot of negative space as well. Right now what I'm struggling with the most is the number of hatch marks, and the angle
